More than half of the Arab States rely heavily on groundwater as their primary freshwater resource.
However, the region faces many challenges in groundwater management.
ESCWA and the Arab Center for the Study of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) organized from 28 to 30 May a workshop in Amman aimed at training representatives from Iraq, Morocco and Tunisia on assessing the impacts of climate change on groundwater resources. The workshop followed the development of a training manual designed for this purpose.
Similarly, ESCWA organized on 26 and 27 May a workshop to train representatives from Morocco, Oman and Tunisia on the use of remote sensing to estimate quantities of groundwater used for irrigation, with support from the Government of Sweden.
