National Statistical Offices and ministries of transport, and energy delegates from the three countries beneficiaries from the project on “Survey of Energy Consumption in the Transport Sector”, namely Egypt, Jordan and Palestine, gathered at ESCWA in Beirut on 23 and 24 July 2015, to launch the results of the Survey (see flyer). In the context of the project on Representatives of the Islamic Development Bank, and the United Kingdom Department for International Affairs who provided the funds to undertake the Survey attended the meeting alongside experts in energy and transport from the World Bank and ESCWA.
In the three countries, the transport sector contributes to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment, but uses 30 to 40 percent of total energy end use, benefits from large amounts of government subsidies and has adverse effects on the environment and inefficient transport systems. Participants shared experiences and lessons learned and put the way forward for evidence-based national energy and transport policies. The survey results revealed that the transport sector used the equivalent of 3 million tons of oil in Jordan, vs. 758 thousand tons in Palestine of oil. It also revealed new information on car efficiency and the demographic and geographic distribution of vehicles and drivers.
