On 16-17 October 2018, the ESCWA Center for Women, in partnership with The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the League of Arab States, and the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, held a regional capacity building workshop for members of the UN-ESCWA Subcommittee on Gender and the SDGs, on mainstreaming gender equality in the implementation and reporting on Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on SDG5.
This workshop, which took place in Alexandria - Egypt, is the second of two workshops aiming to support national efforts of member states in preparing their Voluntary National Reviews (VNR). It also provided an opportunity to share with member countries a handbook on how to prepare VNRs that address and report on developments and achievements in gender equality.
The UN-ESCWA Subcommittee on Gender and the SDGs was established in response to a request made by the ESCWA Committee on Women during its seventh session, which was held in Muscat, Oman on 20 and 21 January 2016, with the aim to improve substantive knowledge and address knowledge gaps related to SDG 5 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
