Protecting older persons from violence and exploitation is stressed upon in the International frameworks governing the rights of older persons and protecting them from abuse constitutes a priority in the fourth regional review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) conducted in 2022 by ESCWA and the United Nations Population Fund Regional Office for Arab States.
ESCWA is organizing a workshop including ageing focal points from 10 member countries to examine the issue of elder abuse that requires special attention from decision-makers and legislators in the Arab region.
The workshop aims to:
- Identify existing legal and policy frameworks and programs to protect older persons from abuse
- Share best experiences to maximize benefit
- Determine the challenges facing Arab governments in this regard.
