Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the city of Manama saw the gathering of around 400 Arab high level personalities in the Second Session of the Arab High-Level Forum on Sustainable Development (AFSD), which was organized by ESCWA and the UN Environment Program (UNEP) in cooperation with the League of Arab States (LAS) on 5-7 May 2015.
Other participants were representatives of UN organizations and agencies; Arab development banks; LAS specialized agencies; as well as civil society organizations concerned with environment and development issues.
The AFSD results were embodied in the "Manama Declaration" and provided a substantive regional input to be submitted to the 3rd Session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) that will be held in New York, from 26 June to 8 July 2015.
The Forum identified the major economic, environmental and social challenges especially in light of the continuing conflicts in the Arab region with the aim to enhance the right to development and human dignity.
