In the framework of the regional review of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), ESCWA and the International Organization for Migration organized the first dialogue with Arab parliamentarians on the subject on 4 February, in cooperation with other members of the Regional United Nations Network on Migration.
ESCWA emphasized the importance of the role of parliaments in ensuring the compatibility of national legislation with international obligations, and in securing that migrants’ rights are institutionalized, for their benefit and that of host communities.
Parliamentarians exchanged experiences regarding GCM national reviews and discussed ways to ensure optimal engagement and contribution to the regional review.
