Tuesday 24 May 2011 (UN Information Centre) – In cooperation with the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut, Doha School is organizing a “Water Day” this coming Friday 27 may 2011, from 9:30 AM until 5:00 PM at the school premises. The Day opens at 9:30 AM with statements by UNIC Director Bahaa Elkoussy, and Doha School Principal Nabil Al Jurdi. Afterwards, a short film will be projected on water risks in Lebanon. The opening ceremony wraps up with the declaration of student recommendations on water issues. A series of lectures will tail the opening, commencing at 11:00 AM with the projection and discussion of ESCWA’s movie “Beirut Water: Water Services and Resource Protection”. A general overview of the Lebanese water status will follow by John Redwine, Communications Officer in the Regional Cooperation project between ESCWA and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR),. The second lecture, entitled “The Role of the Lebanese Centre for Water Conservation and Management (LCWCM)”, will be delivered by LCWCM Director Ziad Khayyat. As for the third lecture, it will discuss “The Role of Green Organizations in Water Protection”, and will be given by representatives from the Big Blue Campaign and Greenpeace. “Water Day” at Doha School also features discussions of researches made by students on all aspects of water issues, where a selection will be made of the best three researches and models. There also will be an exhibition featuring student models, posters and researches, alongside posters and publications of the participating stakeholders. Special activities are planned for children to raise awareness on the importance of water and ways to preserve it, in partnership with “Sohat” water distribution company and Greenpeace.
