ESCWA Executive Secretary discusses in New York issues of interest to the Arab region

Beirut-New York, 19 July 2019 (ESCWA)--Over the last two weeks, and on the sidelines of her participation on top of a delegation in the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti discussed in New York issues of interest to the Arab region with a number of State representatives to the UN.

Dashti met with Palestine's UN Ambassador and Chairman of “Group of 77 and China” Riyad Mansour who stressed the importance of the support provided by the Commission to Palestine through its various activities, and commended the role played by Regional Commissions at the development level.


Her discussions with Bahrain Permanent Representative to the UN Jamal Alrowaiei revolved around the Commission’s practical approach to address development challenges in #Arab countries.


In a separate meeting with Jordan Permanent Representative to the UN Sima Bahous, Dashti expressed the Commission’s commitment to further grow to be more effective and efficient in meeting needs of member States.


ESCWA Executive Secretary also met with Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia at the UN Abdallah Mouallimi who stressed the role of ESCWA in providing support to Arab countries in addressing major challenges they are facing.


Dashti also briefed the Arab Group on work priority areas of ESCWA within the context of a reformed organization in line with aspirations and expectations of member States.


Iraqi Minister of Planning Nouri Al Dulaimi received Dashti and praised the support of ESCWA to Iraq and the increasing demand on its services, which illustrates the overall confidence in it.


ESCWA Chief also discussed with the Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera ways of scaling up mutual cooperation to strengthen the regional dimension of sustainable energy management.


Dashti met as well with the Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN, Ambassador Olof Skoog, co-facilitator of the HLPF Political Declaration. "The 2030 Agenda is about people and the environment that they live in. It is a challenging agenda where everyone needs to fully engage. We will see gains and setbacks but we have no option other than perseverance," she said.


In addition, Dashti met with Emirati Minister of State for Happiness & Wellbeing Ohood Al Roumi where she expressed her interest in highlighting the UAE successful stories, especially in smart government.
