The different countries apply diverse criteria in their attempt to characterize artisanal fisheries, a task in which they refer back to several notions, namely, boat size, fishing traditions, type of "métiers", socio-economic environment, etc. In these conditions, some "métiers" that are a part of artisanal fisheries in one country are however excluded in another.
