Case study on policy reforms to promote renewable energy in Jordan

Having scarce natural resources, Jordan’s concerns over energy security and fossil fuel import dependency have intensified due to the political events in recent years. In fact, Jordan currently imports more than 95% of its energy needs but has a very important renewable energy (RE) potential. In 2016 The RE sources contributed for 4.3% of the total primary energy consumption but Jordan intends to increase its RE production five-fold by 2020 reaching a total capacity of 2,400 MW compared to a present total capacity of 500 MW.
The present case study aims to provide decision-makers, project developers and other actors involved in the renewable energy sector with an analysis of the renewable energy policies and regulatory frameworks that were applied in Jordan to support the energy strategy, and deduce the lessons learned from that experience.
